When it comes to the world of multiplayer shooters, there are many different choices for gamers to consider, depending on whether they want something strategic, fast-paced, or fantasy-infused. Hence, you can take on something like ArmA if you want realism, but titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Call of Duty seem more appealing to the masses. What about niche titles, on the other hand?
LINX BATTLE ARENA tries to be an alternative for people who want something different for a change, and it can actually surprise you if you give it a chance. As such, it’s basically a pretty awkward-looking third-person shooter in which the goal is to survive for as long as possible while everyone else does the same. There are no teams and no other objectives either, so it’s all about the individual for a change.
In short, everyone starts with the same gun, which is a pistol with not many bullets. The goal is to collect coin boxes from around the map in order to afford better and stronger weapons. Everyone else does the same, on the other hand, which usually leads to great skirmishes. The maps are fairly big too, so you can use stealth if you wish to, which is not usually an option in modern multiplayer shooters.
The game isn’t without flaws, however, which is especially obvious in the gameplay department. Your character feels like it’s floating most of the time, which makes it difficult to figure out how to move in certain situations, such as when you are walking on a thin ledge. The shooting itself does not have any kind of feedback, which might be a problem if you come from titles Battlefield or Call of Duty.
Even so, this is clearly an indie production with a tiny budget, so these shortcomings can be ignored if everything else goes smoothly. Thankfully, the experience can be very engaging sometimes, especially if you play with your friends. There are some bots you can train with in single player too, just in case you need a bit of practice. The graphics are very plain as well, but they don’t matter as much under the circumstances.
In the end, LINX BATTLE ARENA does not advertise itself as the next revolution in the genre, because it clearly isn’t. However, if you want something lighter to have fun with every now and again, this can easily fill that gap in your library.
