Working the night shift is rarely a fun activity, not to mention the fact that it messes with your metabolism and various anatomical functions that stop working as they should once you stop sleeping during the night. However, that’s sometimes the least of your problems, depending on which line of work you happen to be in.

Konbini Life is a short visual novel demo in which you play the role of a girl trying to make end’s meet while working the night shift at a convenience store. On the other hand, even in conditions such as this one, you have to make the most out of your situation and even try to find a friend, which is easier said than done when your late-night customers are weirdos and freaks.

Natsu is the name of the girl you play as, and she is quite the relatable person, especially if you happen to be at that age yourself. However, a few other characters enter the picture over the course of the demo, such as her coworker who teases and scolds her with every opportunity, as well as a creep and a foreign guy who’s always smiling and feeling cheerful.

What makes Konbini Life different from most other visual novels is that you get to choose how to proceed every now and again, which means that there are multiple ends you can reach. Obviously, the most important choice you’ll have to make is with whom to communicate more, because one of the men you interact with can end up as your boyfriend toward the end.

As far as the graphics are concerned, the artwork is quite pleasant, especially if you are a fan of anime and you do not mind the funky facial expressions and the weird eyes. However, even the backgrounds are incredibly detailed and moody, although it would seem like the resolution is a tad too low for this day and age. On the other hand, the game was designed for a game jam, so it’s only natural it has a few shortcomings.

In the end, Konbini Life has a pretty unique idea when it comes to the plot, so it might just catch you in its spell. However, it still requires more work before the adventure is complete and you can enjoy everything about it.
