Kohan: Ahriman's Gift Demo

When it comes to fantasy real-time strategy games, it’s the Warcraft series that pops into everyone’s mind. However, there are many other examples out there, some of which managed to gather a substantial and loyal fan base over the years. You can also stumble into different sets of gameplay mechanics and not be confined to the classic formula used by Blizzard.

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift is a standalone prequel for the first game in the series and it certainly adds a lot of content, not to mention the new story, which comes with an entire campaign as well. However, probably the biggest change is the fact that you now get to experience the world of Khaldun from the perspective of the bad guys, given the fact that the campaign allows you to play with the undead forces.

As such, zombies, skeletons, and various other types of undead creatures are under you command this time around. Your purpose is to obviously destroy everything in your path and help evil win the war for a change, which is certainly an exciting prospect. The game also brings a variety of new heroes and two new factions, which should create many strategies and tactics as well.

Just like every other strategy game, you must gather resources in order to output better and more units to overpower your enemies. However, instead of carrying gold out of the mine, you can use your cities to generate income, by building certain structures to do so. In fact, the entire game is very macro-oriented, which makes that much more simple to keep an eye on vast empires.

Speaking of which, the battles are largely unchanged and they still require a lot of thinking in order to come out victorious. Besides the fact that you can only control an entire division at once, the units also stop responding to orders after they enter into combat, so you really must have the right approach from the start. Not only that, but every unit has the ability to gain experience and learn new skills, which makes them more powerful.

All things considered, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift is just as good as the first title in the series and it’s a serious contender for any other RTS out there. Hence, if you are on the lookout for an excellent fantasy RTS to play, you should know that Warcraft is not the only choice.
