When you are listening to a good story, everything else kind of fades in the background, and it doesn’t really matter what goes on in rest, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the story. Role-playing games have gambled on this ever since they first came to be, given the fact that the graphics engine and the general gameplay mechanics were somewhat less important than in your average shooter.
Knights of Voress is an RPG that apparently lived on its own in a cave somewhere, without any contact with the rest of the gaming industry out there. In essence, it borrows characteristic elements from other titles, such as the isometric perspective and the fantasy theme, but it ignores everything else. This might be described as just a demo by the developers, but it’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly does this demonstrate.
As such, there is not much of a story at all, just a map with a few trees, a river, and what appears to be a cave of sorts. You can move around the tiny map and interact with a few enemies that apparently roam aimlessly around the map, but that’s about it. There are no quests and nothing of importance ever happens, no matter how long you decide to wait around.
Although the map you get to explore contains everything from buildings to rivers, everything is very close together, and you do not really feel like you are getting acquainted with either of the environments. In fact, it looks like a bundle of assets thrown in together with no specific purpose or functionality, which yet again hurts the overall experience and atmosphere.
It doesn’t help that the visual quality is abysmal for this day and age, although as previously mentioned, that’s one of the thing gamers can turn a blind eye to if everything else keeps you engaged. Naturally, since there’s nothing to attract your interest, you get plenty of time to complain about the stale graphics and the hideous level design that doesn’t make any kind of sense in some cases.
All things considered, Knights of Voress is bad, and it doesn’t demonstrate a thing about anything. However, there is plenty to learn from this experience, because this is the kind of stuff that transforms boys into men, at least when it comes to game development.
