Klepto is a first person burglary simulation that allows users to enter people’s homes and steal from them. And it even has full VR support.
Come to think of if, we already have a game that lets players steal from people’s home, and it’s called Thief. It’s, in fact, a series of games, but that’s less important. Since the action of Thief happens in another world and a few hundred years into the past, we don’t tend to get disturbed by the fact that the characters that we control are actually stealing.
Now, if we take a similar concept, and we put it in practice in a game that draws inspiration from our times, in familiar neighborhoods, we might start to get the feeling that we’re doing something wrong. In this case, it’s something wrong done with the help of the Unreal Engine that makes Klepto look really good and realistic, so the feeling of guild can be more powerful.
Klepto could be fun
Klepto could be fun, but it has to give users some sort of a gameplay, not just a technical demo that barely works. It’s still in early development and the people from Meerkat Gaming have a lot of work ahead of them. It’s an interesting concept, but for now, it’s just that.
Since the game has just landed in Early Access, there is only a limited demo available that lets users try on a few methods to destroy the people’s live, like breaking their windows, or stealing paintings.
Klepto doesn’t seem to be a game about being subtle, but about being efficient. You enter houses in quite neighborhoods, and you steal anything that fits into the backpack. You're not subtle about it because one your tools is a crowbar. The developers say that it’s going to feature sandbox environment, and we can only believe them.
Klepto is built on the Unreal Engine, which means that it should look good. For now, it only looks OK, and it’s poorly optimized. We can only hope that the finished product will be better, in all aspect.
