Keeper of the Forest Demo

Forests all over the world provide us with clean Oxygen and a place to go when we need some peace and quiet, yet it would seem like no one bothers too much to keep them clean. Not only that, but they are constantly shrinking due to deforestation, which is bad news for everyone. Still, there are people out there that take their jobs seriously.

Keeper of the Forest is not much of a game at the moment, since it’s more of a prototype, but it has some neat ideas to work with. In essence, this is an exploration game with action-adventure elements, as well as very colorful graphics and a simple, yet beautiful world design. You play the role of a forester trying to take care of his patch of land, which involves a variety of tasks.

The game world is not very big as of yet, so you’ll often feel like you are trapped between the mountains that seem to be surrounding the forest. However, there’s enough space to go for a stroll, as well as to participate in a few simple missions, such as finding traps or visiting your home. There’s not much interaction to speak of, but then again, this is not a complete game yet.

Although most of the gameplay revolves around exploration, it’s also worth noting that you have to solve some mini-puzzles as well. Most of them involve finding a path further into the forest, or how to get out of a flowing river, but it’s a nice direction for the game regardless of its current state. Not much is known about the main character either, and the graphics are too basic to make an idea about him.

Speaking of which, the game is developed with Unreal Engine 4, so there’s certainly no shortage of resources in this regard. The simple visual design is by choice, but it would be nice to see more variety and a more intriguing landscape. The post-processing effects can be a bit too much sometimes as well, but at least you have the option to turn them off.

Keeper of the Forest is definitely not ready for the market yet, but it has plenty of room to grow. The core concept is very interesting, and it would nice to see the idea expanded into something better.
