Designing a match-three game is not an easy task nowadays, not when the market is filled to the brim with thousands of similar titles competing for the same spot. Naturally, the goal is to come up with new ideas, otherwise people have no reason to give the game a try. Thus, it’s weird to see developers that do not try to set themselves apart from the rest at all.
Jewel Adventures is a simple match-three game in which your only goal is to pass as many levels as you can by filling the progress bar. There are no time limits and nothing else to keep you engaged, since the game does not even feature different layouts, at least not for the first handful of stages. This quickly becomes repetitive and annoying, especially if you are used to more complex games.
To begin with, the interface is a bit outdated and slow, given the fact that you have to click on the tiles instead of using a classic swipe motion. You can only form line matches, so it doesn’t matter of you get L patterns or anything similar, because the game ignores them. Only one match is processed at a time as well, so there are times when you simply have to wait for a while until every match is cleared one-by-one.
As mentioned before, the only goal is to fill the bar at the bottom of the screen. There’s nothing to rush you along or incentivize you, since there are no combos and no power-ups. The layout doesn’t change, at least not quickly enough, so you are stuck with a traditional rectangle for the most part. This gets boring about as quickly as you imagine, especially since no new mechanics are introduced either.
To be in tune with the rest of the game, the graphics are very simple as well, sporting no special effects or intriguing level design. The tiles are very mundane and forgettable as well, although they would obviously not matter as much if the rest of the game was more engaging. There’s barely any soundtrack either, except for a few simple sound effects whenever the tiles pop.
It’s surprising to see such a simple game nowadays, especially when there are so many tools out there that allow the developers to include interesting mechanics. Hence, Jewel Adventures is too simple and repetitive to be fun for more than a few minutes.
