Amnesia is an affliction that seems to infect movie and video game characters on a regular basis, since more and more of them are suffering from memory loss lately. Thankfully, it works great as a plot mechanic, and people do not seem to be upset at the fact that the gimmick repeats itself so often. Obviously, some of the stories can be quite exciting, and there are some fine examples out there.
Immortal Love: Letter From The Past Collector's Edition is a casual adventure game with point-and-click gameplay mechanics and a pretty intricate story. Just like in most such games, your primary objectives are to explore the environment and find useful items, which can then be used to solve puzzles and move on with the story. Dialog and various mini-games are part of the recipe as well.
The story puts you in the role of a man who was sentenced to death for the murder of a woman. Naturally, the main character realizes all this only after he wakes up in prison with no memory of what happened. Thus, with help from a magic amulet that can send you back in time, you have to figure out what really happened and clear your name, as well as rescue the woman in question.
Gameplay-wise, everything should be quite familiar to those that are intimate with the genre. By collecting every item you come across and combining them in ingenious ways, you have to solve a variety of puzzles and riddles. Hidden object sequences are included as well, not to mention a great deal of other mini-games that put your logic to the test on a regular basis.
All is well in the graphics department too, especially when it comes to the environment and the way everything was designed to create a proper atmosphere. Unfortunately, the cutscenes are a bit rough and sketchy in some cases, but it’s not that big of a problem most of the time. At least the voice acting is decent for most characters.
When it’s all said and done, Immortal Love: Letter From The Past Collector's Edition doesn’t bring anything new to the formula, but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. In fact, the familiar elements should make it that much easier for casual players to start playing right away.
