The idea that video games are art was debated many times in the past, but nowadays most people would agree that they are indeed works of art. They can be as cinematic as a movie, as gorgeous as a painting, as well as well-written as a bestselling novel, so there’s really no question about it. However, it all depends on how much effort goes into the development process.
Immersive Poetry focuses on the visual aspect, since it tries to create a soothing atmosphere using colorful landscapes and relaxing music. This is mainly a walking simulator most of the time, given the fact that there is action and most of your time is spent walking from one point to the other, but there are some puzzles in there as well. Thus, it’s more difficult to get bored than in a regular exploration game.
The whole game is based on real-world locations, and your character is trying to find the beauty in every landscape by taking pictures. There are some other puzzles as well, but most of the time you are focused on finding specific things to snap pictures of them. The mechanics are very simple as well, given the fact that all you have to do is point the cursor at the object in question and click.
Walking is a big chunk of the experience, and unfortunately there are some problems in this regard. The first one of them is the fact that you are forced to follow a linear path through open environments, which is very frustrating. The second one is that your character moves painfully slow, even with the fast option activated. However, it depends on how much you like admiring colorful scenery.
Speaking of which, the game is powered by Unreal Engine 4, so it certainly has the potential to present you with breathtaking environments. There are not many objects to admire, on the other hand, except of course for trees, rocks and the occasional hill. You can also look at flowers and various insects, but it’s quite obvious that the developers did not have the manpower to model too many detailed objects for the game.
In the end, Immersive Poetry could have used more variety and less strict player movement, but if you manage to ignore these aspects you can still have a great time. Hence, it’s worth a try if you want to look at something pretty for a few minutes.
