Space shmups are not as popular as they used to be back in the day, but they can still provide gamers with one hell of a good time. However, it is pretty difficult to strike the perfect balance of action and fun, especially since shmups are traditionally quite punishing and unforgiving with newcomers. On the other hand, the shooting is all that matters in the end.

I'm Alice is a retro shoot ‘em up in which your goal is simple: survive for as long as you can and defy all odds when faced with dozens of alien ships trying to destroy you. It is also possible to pick up a variety of power-ups and fight back with even more power, although the challenge remains pretty daunting most of the time. As long as you have good reflexes and don’t give up, on the other hand, every encounter is survivable.

There is not much of a story to talk about, although you can probably understand that the action takes place sometime in the future. Spaceships are the main method of transportation, and they are also the primary weapon for every type of conflict. Naturally, they vary depending on size and power, although that is mostly true for the enemies, since yours doesn’t change all that much.

Just like in every other shoot ‘em out there, power-ups are your bread and butter, because they provide you with extra lives, special abilities and increased firepower. Although you do not necessarily require them to survive the levels, it can be too frustrating to do without sometimes. It’s also important to save them up for later, because sometimes special abilities are wasted on weaker mobs.

One last thing that impresses about I’m Alice is the graphics engine. Although it’s designed to look retro and pixelated, the artwork is great, and you really feel like you’re playing something from a few decades ago. The controls are responsive and accurate, making it really easy to avoid incoming damage if your reflexes are quick enough.

I'm Alice can be a tad too difficult for regular gamers, but it’s certainly not impossible by any means. Hence, if you enjoy the genre and you are up for a challenge, this is certainly something to keep an eye on.
