ICY: Frostbite Edition Demo

There are many ways the world can end, some of which are not entirely random or up to the forces of nature. Hence, humans are now numerous enough to affect the planet as a whole, and the pollution is strong enough to cause planetary disasters. It’s not quite there yet, but we just might cause another ice age with all the noxious gas released into the atmosphere.

ICY: Frostbite Edition is a survival game with RPG and visual novel elements, in which your goal is to lead a group of people through a dangerous environment and make sure everyone makes it to the end. You also get to steer the story in the desired direction by making choices, which means that it’s possible to replay the game multiple times without experiencing the same events twice.

As mentioned before, the game world is under a new ice world, so everything is pretty much frozen and full of new obstacles. You can create a new character in the beginning, as well as customize your skills by choosing to spend points in talents like hunting, exploration, stealth and firearms. Everything hangs on these abilities sometimes, especially during special events that decide how the story evolves.

In case you are not aware of it, ICY: Frostbite Edition is actually a remake of the original game released a few years ago. The developers have reworked everything about it using the newest Unity engine, so it certainly looks a lot better. However, the mostly text-based gameplay mechanics have remained more or less the same, which means that there is no actual real-time action to engage in.

As far as the graphics are concerned, you can tell that quite a bit of work went into the backgrounds and the nice interface elements, but then again everything is a tad too static sometimes. The characters are fairly interesting, and there are a few animations every now and again, which helps with the atmosphere. The soundtrack is nice too, although it’s not exactly memorable either.

In the end, ICY: Frostbite Edition might not attract new people to the genre, but it’s engaging enough to provide you with a few hours of fun. The character customization options add more depth to the story as well, as do the possibility to handle certain events multiple ways.
