Hunter's Legacy Demo

Old-school platformers never seem to go out of style, especially now that the PC market has been flooded by indie developers. Moreover, the retro current is still going strong, mainly because there are so many free graphic engines that facilitate game development and deployment on multiple platforms at once.

Hunter's Legacy is a 2D platformer in the style of Metroid and Castlevania, which makes it a Metroidvania contraption like many others in the genre. It’s not a bad formula, on the other hand, and it’s that much more pleasant when the developers get it right, which happens to be the case with Hunter's Legacy. Thus, it’s all about exploring interesting levels, killing enemies and collecting gems.

The story puts you in the role of a huntress by the name of Un’Amak, who’s on a quest to destroy a great evil and save the world. Un’Amak is also a bipedal cat, although that doesn’t seem to have any impact on her ability to hurt the bad guys. Hence, you can use a variety of special abilities and weapons to deal damage and keep the enemy at bay, plus a few tricks that help with exploration.

Speaking of which, the level design is quite open, which means that you can explore different routes and hunt treasures by going off the main path. Whether you climb onto higher platforms or descend underground, there’s always something waiting for you if you are willing to put in a bit of time. Naturally, you can also focus on the main mission alone and not worry about improving your score.

As for the graphics and the level design, the game is very pleasant to look at, especially since it’s so colorful and well-designed. Not just that, but even the enemies you meet along the way are mighty interesting and sometimes even impressive. On top of it all, the controls are always spot on when it comes to how the character responds to your input, which is great news in a platformer such as this one.

All things considered, Hunter's Legacy may frustrate those who are new to the genre, but old fans should feel right at home with the tough combat and the challenging platforming. However, it’s recommended that you use a controller to get the most out of the game.
