Classic role-playing games made quite an impression on gamers back in the day, which is why so many of them refuse to get along with new-age releases. Flashy graphics were never part of the deal with such games, mainly because everyone accepted the fact that developers preferred to focus on the story, characters and dialog options.
Heroes of Legionwood is a top-down role-playing game design and coded in RPGMaker, so there’s nothing special about it from a visual or a technical point of view. Hence, it’s all about the story and the journey itself, although the actual gameplay mechanics are not very intricate either. There’s a stronger focus on turn-based combat, as well as on the decisions you make throughout the story.
Speaking of which, the plot revolves around a young hero and his brave quest to save the world. However, the world has already been destroyed by the Darkness, since there's only a handful of people left alive. Your task is to find a way to banish the Darkness and reach the one that controls it, in order to save your family and give humanity another chance.
As mentioned before, the turn-based combat system has been refined since the two previous games in the series, and this episodes focuses more on conflict as well. Thus, you need to learn how to make proper use of your skills and spend the received experience points on increasing the most effective stats for your character class. Whether you use swords, bows or magic, each class has its quirks, and some can deal with better with certain situations.
Given the fact that the game is built using RPG Maker, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that everything is designed using tiles. The 2D engine is decent enough to render some dreamy scenes, but there are some limitations as well. As an example, the character hitboxes can get in the way on more than one occasion, such as when NPCs block a bridge that you must cross. Thankfully, every NPC moves around the map, so you only have to wait for a while until the path is clear.
While there certainly are much better RPGs out there, Heroes of Legionwood is not so bad itself, mainly because of the mood it inspires. The story is not bad, and there are more than enough encounters to provide you with a challenge and keep you on edge.
