Although we all realize it at one point, life is pretty boring if we don’t try to make it more exciting. On the other hand, there’s safety in boredom, not to mention the fact that there’s also less disappointment when you are not actively trying to achieve something. Thankfully, video games can be a great way to keep your mind alert and in good shape.

Hello Charlotte is a simple visual novel/role-playing game in which you get to control the life of your character and make all the decisions for her to see how everything turns out in the end. The game is rather rough when it comes to gameplay mechanics and graphics, but some of the ideas are quite tantalizing and thought-provoking. Hence, you can have a lot of fun feeling like a puppeteer.

The game world is pretty strange as well, given the fact that it all takes place in some kind of alternate reality where aliens and humans coexist with each other. Your goal is to get Charlotte through the days with as few incidents as possible, while also dealing with mundane tasks like watching TV, cooking and reading romance novels.

The game is played from a top-down perspective, and you get to explore one room at a time, although there are no huge loading screens to encumber the experience. Hence, each room holds some kind of activity, such as a TV, the dinner table or a bed. You can accomplish all sorts of objectives, as well as interact with Charlotte’s friends and alien acquaintances.

The graphics are about as basic as they can get, since they can even be black & white lines sometimes, which makes it difficult to really get into the proper mood. However, there are a few interesting artwork pieces every now and again, and there’s also a soundtrack to keep you company. Hence, it may just distract you from the outside world for a while.

In the end, Hello Charlotte is not a bad game, but it needs a lot more work before it can be engaging enough to make you forget about everything else. Hence, it’s certainly on the right track when it comes to story and atmosphere.
