If you are familiar with fantasy MMORPGs, then you probably know that the healer’s job is the most dreaded one of all, which is why there’s always a constant need for healers. However, it’s also true that it can be very frustrating to play as the guy who must keep everyone alive, especially since having a healer in the party means that everyone else gets to act as recklessly as possible at all times.

Healer's Quest is a humorous role-playing game that pokes a bit of fun at the problem, while also forcing you to play the role of the healer and see exactly how annoying it can be. In essence, you are a mage tasked with healing a party of heroes, heroes that can barely take two steps in any direction without needing to be bathed in healing potions and potent protection magic.

The story is not very complex, and it doesn’t need to be either. Hence, the group is trying to achieve glory by searching for the biggest and meanest foes around the realm. Each one of them has a specific specialization, such as barbarian, knight, archer and wizard. They also have different styles and needs, like the fact that the knight excels if he is kept at 85% health or more, while the barbarian does the most damage when his health is below 30%. All of these concepts make the gameplay that much more challenging and engaging.

As always, a healer consumes mana by the bucket every time he needs to keep an ally from dying, which is why it’s important that you replenish it as quickly as possible. Your character has a few other spells as well, and some of them can help you recover mana at a faster rate. On top of it all, you also have to remember that the wand in your hand can only handle so much action, so you’ll have to stop or risk overheating it.

Lastly, the technical aspects of the game are not particularly impressive, and they fail to please the eye in certain circumstances. While the art style is certainly unique, it feels pretty cheap sometimes, although it shouldn’t be a problem on the long run. The soundtrack is great as well, so it should be easier to overlook most of the other inconveniences.

In the end, it’s the core concept that makes Healer's Quest so engaging and unique, even if it’s not that original. The humor is a bit forced too sometimes, especially when the characters break the fourth wall, but at least you get to customize the main character in a variety of ways and achieve multiple endings.
