Time travel is a bit annoying to use as a plot device in movies, books or video games, mainly because paradoxes are impossible to explain. You can work around them using complicated explanations and some big words, but it’s actually much easier to just have a more casual approach to the subject and assume that the players are more interested in the other aspects of the story.
Grim Tales: The Time Traveler is an adventure game in which you get to travel through time and tackle a murder mystery at the same time. Everything related to the gameplay mechanics is designed to be as straightforward as possible, so if you are a regular of the genre you should be able to pick things up from the first minutes, even if you decide to disable the tutorial features.
The story puts you in the role of a woman named Anna, who is on her way to a family barbecue when disaster strikes and she gets into a car accident. Not only that, but it turns out that her nephew has been murdered by a crazed maniac, and the only way to stop him is to travel back in time and prevent him from achieving his plans. Obviously, there’s nothing too groundbreaking in terms of writing, but everything is engaging enough to keep you interested.
Depending on the chosen difficulty level, every scene features a series of challenges for you to overcome, including puzzles and mini-games. If you play on the lower difficulties, the puzzles can be skipped if you cannot be bothered to solve them, but that kind of defeats the purpose. None of the riddles are particularly tough anyway, since most of the time you just have to find the right pattern and apply it a couple of times.
There are all sorts of hints and helpful guides along the way too, so you rarely have to work too hard in order to figure out where to go or what to do. In regards to the graphics, the scenes are very detailed and full of color, which really helps with the overall atmosphere. Lastly, the environmental sound effects tie the whole thing together nicely, and the cutscenes are not half-bad either.
While it may not feature a particularly remarkable story, the truth is that you can easily lose a few hours with Grim Tales: The Time Traveler, especially if you like fantasy tropes and solving mysteries. Thus, it’s a good choice for the fans of the genre. NOTE: This is a downloader for the game. Once run, the application will automatically download and install the game on your computer.
