Griddlers: Tropical Delight

It’s not difficult to design a mosaic puzzle game in terms of gameplay, but it’s a whole other thing to make it enjoyable and fun for more than a few minutes. Given the very slow pace and lack of action, players have to be distracted using clever puzzles or nice artwork, which doesn’t always work. On the other hand, most nonogram fans know what they are getting into, and it really depends on your relationship with the genre.

Griddlers: Tropical Delight is a regular nonogram puzzle game that provides you with the chance to take a virtual trip to the tropics and have a good time while tackling tile-based puzzles. There are no incredible new mechanics at work and no ingenious puzzles either, but at least they are complex enough to provide you with a challenge every now and again.

There’s obviously no grand story to surprise you, but at least you get to explore a tropical island, at least in a very subtle sense. Hence, the backgrounds change every now and again in order to show you a different part of the island, including a few underwater shots and even an active volcano. The other things that change along the way are the mosaics themselves, so don’t expect too much variety.

In case you are not familiar with mosaic puzzle games, your goal is to fill the empty tiles with the available colors, but you have to follow the instructions in order to place them in the right place. Hence, each row and column displays one or more numbers, and these numbers represent the amount of tiles that must be filled. It’s a very simple formula, but it works like a charm and it’s very addictive.

However, there’s a golden rule in the genre when it comes to sketchy situations, and Griddlers: Tropical Delight breaks it a couple of times. Hence, there are a few times when you have to guess what goes where instead of using logic, given the nature of the mosaics. This is very annoying, especially since you are supposed to find the answer using your brain.

In the end, Griddlers: Tropical Delight has all the right components to distract you from your problems for a few hours, especially since it features over one hundred levels. Even so, the fact that you have to base your strategy on luck sometimes can be a tad annoying.
