Although scientists are constantly working on things designed to make everyone’s life better, some of them can go to extreme lengths in order to test their theories. There are plenty of examples when it comes to unethical experiments and dangerous tests, but then again it’s pretty difficult to keep track of them. Naturally, such things make for great movie and video game stories.

Greed: Old Enemies Returning is a puzzle game with hidden object elements, in which you play the role of a detective called to investigate a series of strange events at a laboratory. The game is part of a series, but you do not have to be familiar with the previous installments in order to make heads or tails of this one. Hence, the case you tackle here has very little to do with all the previous cases.

In this episode, you are called to investigate Pontoon Laboratories, where some strange things have been happening. As it turns out, the place is haunted by dark spirits all sorts of nasty creatures, so your detective work is often not enough to solve the puzzles. Instead, you must also use a variety of special items in order to dispel spirits and keep both you and your friends safe.

The mechanics haven’t changed in the meantime, which means that you can jump straight into the action without worrying about the tutorial. All you have to do is examine every scene and pick up items that might come in handy later on. The puzzles are not very difficult either, but some of them can require a bit of trial and error in order to find the answer. Depending on the chosen difficulty level, the game can provide you with hints throughout the adventure.

Since the interface is about as classic as it can get in the genre, the graphics are nothing too special either, but the artwork is definitely enjoyable and detailed. There’s a bit of pixelation sometimes if you play the game on full-HD resolutions, but given the fact that the artwork is hand-drawn, that is not a huge problem. There’s voice acting for every dialog scene, which really helps with the overall atmosphere.

In the end, Greed: Old Enemies Returning is not a bad sequel, but it doesn’t try very hard to provide you with new types of puzzles. Hence, monotony can set in rather quickly, especially if you are a veteran of the genre.
