It has been proven many times over the years that simple concepts can have a great impact in the world of video games, especially if the gameplay mechanics are fluid and enjoyable. The retro current is very strong nowadays, so many indie developers rehash old ideas and transpose them into a slightly more modern context, which works wonders under the right circumstances.

Gorescript is a challenging first-person shooter with blocky graphics and fast-paced gameplay mechanics, in which the main goal is to get to the end of every level alive. You face ball-shaped enemies along the way, most of which attack you on sight, and you have to make full use of your reflexes in order to avoid dying. It can be a tad repetitive sometimes, but it’s a great way to blow off some steam every now and again.   Your character can equip a few interesting weapons, including shotguns and a few other handy rifles, but you also have a hammer that can be used when you run out of ammo. Speaking of which, it’s worth mentioning that you really have to conserve your ammunition, because bullets come in limited quantities. Hence, there’s more strategy involved than it would appear at first.

Each level is unique in terms of layout, but the simple graphics kind of makes them all look very similar. You still have to pay attention to the corridors in order to find the exit, not to mention the fact that you also have to find keys to open some of the doors. There are boss fights included as well, and they are quite tricky, even if they are fewer than you might hope.   Permadeath is an optional feature too, just in case you want to increase the challenge and truly test your patience. As a bonus, you can even compare your stats to other players using the online leaderboard, which is a great way to extend the game’s replay value. Lastly, the blocky graphics are very clean and enjoyable, and the pixelated gore only adds to the fun.

Gorescript has more than enough content and difficulty levels to keep you engaged for a few hours. It can certainly get repetitive after a while, but the fun is rekindled if you take a break every now and again, especially thanks to the hardcore difficulty levels that put your reflexes to the test.
