Action games are designed to keep you on edge at all times, especially since you have to tackle hordes of enemies and do your best to stay alive. The hardest thing about designing such a game is to avoid making it repetitive, given the fact that the combat loses its appeal after the first few hundred encounters. On the other hand, it really depends on how many options are at your disposal in terms of combos and special abilities.
Gone with the Demon is a very intriguing first-person action game in which hand-to-hand combat is the primary way of dealing with enemies. Other neat ideas are part of the deal as well, including a role-playing system that allows you to level up, combos that put your coordination to the test, as well as an intriguing enemy difficulty system designed to punish your mistakes.
Your character can attack from both directions, depending on which fist you decide to use. It’s also possible to guard against attacks or use a specific combination of hits in order to unleash combos, not to mention the fact that sometimes you have to break the enemy’s guard first. There’s a lengthy tutorial that shows you all this, on the other hand, so you do not have to worry about learning the ropes.
It must be mentioned that the counterattacks are a tad difficult to tackle at first, given the fact that you have to react in a very short window of time in order for your character to perform the move. This can be annoying at first, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to get used to it after enough practice. The enemies get stronger every time they kill you, at least until you make an offering to scale them back to their normal selves. This actually adds a lot of excitement to the game, and it’s a very engaging idea that should be part of more projects.
The combos are not too difficult to achieve, but you have to keep an eye on your stamina to avoid running out of energy after an empty swing. As far as the graphics are concerned, the game looks gorgeous in terms of texture quality and materials, not to mention the nice special effects added on top that make everything appear more like a movie.
It’s the combat that makes Gone with the Demon so difficult to put down, even if it might take a while to get used to it. The fact that you have to limit your deaths in order to keep the enemies from getting stronger also contributes to the atmosphere as a whole, although better artificial intelligence would make things even better.
