Every now and again a developer manages to come up with an original gameplay idea, but that’s usually not enough to make a good impression on the players. Instead, the idea must also be implemented in a creative way, which usually means a neat set of gameplay mechanics. Thus, it’s no wonder that so few new concepts hit the market nowadays, in spite of the multitude of development tools available out there.

Golem Creation Kit is an interesting adventure game that blends quite a few elements when it comes to the gameplay, since it borrows ideas from visual novels, point & click games, as well as tower defense flicks. In short, the main idea is that you have to combine various materials into a cauldron in order to obtain golems, which are then used to defend yourself against angry mobs.

The mobs in question are coming after you with pitchforks and the usual revolt tools, but the game is less about weapon damage and more about appearances. Thus, your golems should be able to repel attacks if you manage to build them in time, which is actually the most important part. The whole point is to drag & drop items into the inventory and then into the cauldron as quickly as possible, although the materials are pretty important too sometimes.

The golems you build depend on the materials you use, and there are plenty to choose from. Wood, stone and metal are just some of the choices, but even things such as clouds can be thrown into the cauldron if you cannot think of something better. It’s also worth mentioning that you are constantly fighting against the clock, since you have a limited amount of time to collect the resources and spawn your golems.

You can also switch between different environments, each one of which contains different resources that you can use. Speaking of which, the graphics are designed to look retro and quite colorful, but be prepared to deal with quite the pixelated backgrounds. It shouldn’t be too big of an issue if you are a fan of retro flicks, and the music is quite nice as well, which is always a plus.

Golem Creation Kit is actually quite fun and intriguing, not to mention the fact that many of the concepts are quite new. Thus, you can have a lot of fun with the game if you can decipher the mechanics and manage to beat the time limits.
