Simple games can sometimes have tremendous success with the public, depending on how fun the gameplay is. Hence, even if all you have to do is tap on the screen in order to keep a bird from hitting obstacles, that can be enough to attract millions of players. Granted, something new is required in order to make an impression, because no one is getting excited about a Flappy Bird clone.

Gingerbread Story is a match-three game sporting the usual gameplay mechanics seen in the genre, and in truth there is nothing new under the sun no matter where you look. You can skip the tutorial and start amassing points right away, given the fact that there are no new tricks to learn or anything of the sort. However, at least you are dealing with a different story and new tiles, which is a good thing.

The story revolves around two siblings who go on a walk in the woods and stumble upon a house covered in sweets, much like in the popular Hansel and Gretel tale. Naturally, they cannot stop themselves from entering this house, and the creepy old lady living there locks up Tommy. Not only that, but she also demands that Lisa goes out in the woods in order to find the gingerbread man.

As mentioned before, the mechanics are as classic as they can get, which means that all you have to do is move colorful tiles around in order to get at least three of them in a row. That’s usually not enough to finish the levels in time, however, which is why it’s important to aim for combos that allow you to clear a big chunk of the board in a matter of seconds.

Power-ups become available later on as well, and they can get you out of trouble when you run out of ideas. Other obstacles are added along the way too, such as special tiles that need to be cleared twice in order to count toward your objective. As for the graphics, everything is as colorful as you would expect from a game where everything is made out of candy and gingerbread.

In the end, Gingerbread Story does not try very hard to be original when it comes to the story or the gameplay, but you cannot deny its appeal, especially to younger audiences. The interface is simple enough for everyone to find their way around.
