Tom Clancy is responsible for plenty of bestsellers worldwide, as well as some pretty successful movie and video game adaptations over the years. The Splinter Cell franchise springs to mind, but Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon are also quite popular and extremely well-made. Now, the second installment in the Advanced Warfighter series has hit the shelves, featuring a long list of improvements.
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 maintains the same flavor as the original, although it ups the ante on the futuristic gadgetry that’s part of the team’s arsenal and changes the scenery entirely. Hence, the conflict now takes place around the United States and Mexico border, where rebels are attempting to breach into America and need to be stopped by an elite team of problem-solvers.
The core mechanics seem to be the same, which means that you still have to move as a team and constantly shout orders to your teammates if you are to succeed. Bullets can quickly incapacitate you, so two or three shots are enough to end the mission and it certainly makes the entire experience feel more realistic. However, although controlling the friendly A.I. is usually engaging and fun, it does tend to become rather repetitive sometimes.
Once you are out on a mission, things get a bit tricky when it comes to the difficulty level, because the enemy always seems to know where you are and it can accurately pinpoint your position from quite the long distance. Things get gradually more and more difficult as you advance through the missions, only to become downright frustrating toward the end of the campaign. You can pull through, however, if you convince yourself that it is worth it.
Fortunately, all is well in the graphics department and there shouldn’t be any reason to complain about the visual quality. The environments look very nice, the models are detailed, post-processing effects add to the atmosphere and the animations are spot-on in most cases. A great deal of good things can be said about the physics engine and the voice acting as well, which complete the experience and make everything seem more believable.
In the end, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 is a pretty balanced product, but it could have been much more if only the developers didn’t get ahead of themselves toward the end. Thus, although you can have a lot of fun with the game at hand, it can also get on your nerves every once in a while.
