Investigating weird cases can be a lot of fun under the right circumstances, especially in video games where your skills as a detective do not affect anyone. Video games usually provide you with a chance to save the day and be a hero, while real life is rarely fair or rewarding in such cases. The HOPA genre is the reigning champion in this niche, thanks to the dozens of titles released every year.

Ghost Files: The Face of Guilt is a hidden object adventure game in which you play as a detective and tackle an interesting case. There are no revelations in terms of gameplay mechanics, since you should be able to jump straight in if you are a veteran of the genre, but the real fun is in the story and your ability to solve the riddles in order to bring the case to its conclusion.

Your character’s name is Emily Meyer, and she is assigned to a serial killer case called “The Guilty Man”. Things get interesting right away, given the fact that a mysterious woman calls in saying that she knows the name of the killer. Thus, you must trace this woman and find out what she actually knows, as well as find the actual killer by the end of the story.

Most of your game time is spent looking for clues around the environment, because every scene contains multiple items that can be picked up and used to solve puzzles. Speaking of which, the riddles are fairly intriguing and challenging as well, given the fact that you rarely tackle the same puzzles. On the other hand, the underlying concepts are hardly different, so it shouldn’t be difficult to learn the ropes.

As far as the technical aspects of the games, everything is more or less as you would expect, with hand-drawn graphics, a decent soundtrack and OK voice acting to support the cutscenes. You can tell that the designers have put some soul into the backgrounds and the characters, but then again the lack of 3D environments is still pretty annoying in this day and age.

In the end, Ghost Files: The Face of Guilt is another great flick for the fans of the genre, especially since it keeps you in suspense all the way through. Hence, both veterans and newcomers should have a blast over the course of the story.
