Funtoon's World Demo

Collecting coins is a big part of platformer games, even if nowadays the concept sounds fairly silly. However, games used to be a lot more difficult back in the day, even if the gameplay mechanics did not involve intricate choices or anything of the sort. Thus, the difficult part was to react quickly to dangers and perform all sorts of acrobatics in order to avoid obstacles.

Funtoon's World is a 2D platformer with basic gameplay mechanics, in which you have to explore colorful levels and collect coins along the way. Enemies also make an appearance, and it’s important to either avoid them or destroy them in order to get to all the coins. There’s not much to worry about in terms of gameplay, given the fact that you can understand everything from the first seconds of play.

Your character is a rabbit on the prowl for coins and various other bonuses, and the levels take it through a variety of environments. You can perform double jumps to get to higher platforms, which comes in handy when you have to avoid enemies as well. Speaking of which, all you have to do in order to defeat opponents is to jump on top of them, much like in classics such as Super Mario.

As far as the controls are concerned, it’s very easy to manage your character when all it can do is run around and jump. Making good use of the double jump feature is important, but all of this can be learned in a matter of seconds, so there’s not much a challenge. This can be a bit of a drawback if you are looking for a hardcore platformer, but then again the game is aimed at a more casual audience.

The graphics are not bad either, but they are far from impressive in terms of artwork, animations or textures. Thus, there are multiple environments to visit along the way, but many fall rather flat and fail to make an impression on you. The level design can be a tad too simplistic sometimes, given the fact that there is usually just one route to follow to the end.

In the end, Funtoon's World could have done a lot more with the elements at its disposal, but instead it just feels like a very rushed product. Thus, it’s difficult to enjoy yourself when there’s no real challenge to speak of and no new ideas to explore.
