In horror movies and video games, you can tell things are about to go wrong from the second you see the main location. A secluded cabin in the woods, an abandoned mental hospital or a rundown hotel are all clear death zones, but the characters never share the sentiment. Not only that, but everyone dismisses every bad sign until someone is dead or severely injured.

Fright Chasers: Dark Exposure is a hidden object adventure game in which you get to explore a rather interesting location for a change, which is always nice to see in the genre. As such, instead of haunted hotels or prisons you are investigating an observatory where strange things have been happening. Naturally, things are as regular as they can be in the gameplay department, which is great news for the fans.

The story begins with the main character going to the Kilbourn Observatory in order to investigate some strange events that took place there, but things turn rather grim pretty quickly. Hence, your partner is kidnapped by some kind of evil entity, so your job is to enter the observatory and find a way to rescue your friend. It’s not an award-winning story, but it does its job.

As mentioned before, the mechanics are designed to be familiar to the veterans of the genre, while also accommodating new players. There’s a helpful tutorial in place to get you started, but you can find your way around the interface and the puzzles without it just as well. As for the difficulty level itself, it varies from puzzle to puzzle, depending on your ability to figure out what the game is asking of you.

The artwork is as pretty as ever, especially since the backgrounds usually feature dreamy landscapes, creepy locations or all sorts of nasty creatures. Naturally, the animations can be a bit disappointing sometimes, but there is only so much you can achieve with this type of technology. The sound effects are great too, and the voice acting is not too bad either.

It’s nice to see some different locations for a change, and Fright Chasers: Dark Exposure really delivers in this regard.
