Fast-paced racing games are designed to test your reflexes and provide you with a good time for as long as you wish, be it ten minutes of a few hours. Hence, it really depends on what you are looking for in a racing game, and it also depends on how smooth the gameplay mechanics are. Few things are worse than fast-paced mechanics in combination with awkward controls and performance issues, which is exactly what the game at hand provides you with.
Formula Fusion is a good-looking racing game with arcade mechanics and interesting machines for you to pilot/drive, but it also comes with quite a few problems. Although the first thing you notice about it is the great visual quality, it quickly turns out that the game is very poorly optimized, regardless of your PC specs. The controls are lazy as well, even if you use a gamepad. To begin with, the whole idea of the game is to push your reflexes to the limit and make it as difficult as possible for you to win races. The action takes place on wild suspended tracks in various sci-fi environments, and your goal is to get to the finish line first. You can actually use weapons to take out the competition, so it’s not always required to be the fastest driver in order to win the first place.
The ships are customizable as well, which means that you can add the desired weapon load-outs and even change a few cosmetic things about them too. However, the menu and the general interface are very badly designed, mainly because it’s difficult to figure out what’s what most of the time, and it takes a long time to move from one screen to the other. It’s also worth mentioning that the game features very annoying performance issues, so you should expect heavy frame drops regardless of your system’s specs. This can probably be fixed with a patch in the future, but then again it’s never a pleasant experience to see a game released in this state. The controls are a bit too slow and unresponsive for this type of game as well, especially if you actually want to win races.
In the end, Formula Fusion is obviously not a bad game, but at the moment it is not ready to hit the market at all. Hence, it needs more work in order for all the flaws to be ironed out, so you might want to wait for things to settle down a bit.
