Simple ideas can still yield incredible results with the right amount of creativity, which is especially true for video games. Hence, it doesn’t take much to come up with a neat gameplay idea that improves on a decade-old formula, but getting the idea the hard part. You still have to work on the gameplay mechanics as well and make sure they are as solid as possible.

Formless Adventure is a neat platformer with puzzle elements in which you play the role of a character that does not have an actual form. Hence, he is basically a blob that slides from place to place with ease, not to mention the fact that you can also change your shape to achieve a variety of other purposes, such as squeezing through otherwise inaccessible places.

To begin with, each level has a variety of traps and challenges you have to overcome, most of which can be tackling by simply jumping. Granted, you need to coordinate your moves fairly well in order to reach certain platforms, especially when they are moving from one place to the other. As you advance through the stages, on the other hand, things get even tougher to deal with.

It’s also possible to collect certain items along the way, such as coins that do not seem to be used for anything as of yet. There are also checkpoints that save both your form and your progress, so you do not have to worry about making mistakes. Unfortunately, sometimes you can get stuck between objects, and the restart button actually takes you to the beginning of the level and forgets all about the checkpoints.

The graphics are not bad either, but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary. Even if Unreal Engine 4 powers the game, it’s still a very simple-looking project, sporting 2D environments and basic textures. On the other hand, the level design is quite nice, not to mention challenging, so you may be able to forget about the low-poly graphics once you start playing.

In the end, Formless Adventure features a decent combination of gameplay mechanics and a high enough difficulty level to keep you engaged for quite some time. Hence, if you want to see more of the game and support the developers, you can lend them a hand by participating in their IndieGoGo campaign.
