Old buildings typically look they are hiding a lot of secrets, which is why many people are so interested in them. Naturally, the entertainment business has taken full advantage of this, which is why we have so many horror movies and video games taking place in abandoned buildings. On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with the idea as long as it’s interesting enough.

Forgotten Places: Regained Castle is a hidden object adventure game that puts you in the role of a young woman trying to investigate the mystery behind an old castle. There’s nothing original about the game when it comes to gameplay mechanics or anything like that, but at least the adventure is engaging, and there are enough puzzles to keep you busy over the course of the story.

Speaking of which the plot revolves around a woman named Jane, who one day receives a letter from her guardian that reads “You’re next!”. Naturally, Jane’s guardian is nowhere to be found, which is yet another blow for her after losing her parents when she was very young. Now she must investigate the castle where her guardian lived, and it would appear that not everything is in order there.

Most of your time is spent looking for useful items, which is achieved by simply clicking on various objects and areas until something happens. However, there are certain mini-games that break up the action every now and again, such as actual hidden object sequences, or puzzles that require you to move things around and figure out how a certain mechanism works.

One thing that’s somewhat different in Forgotten Places: Regained Castle than in other games in the genre is the graphic style. Although the technology used is the same, which means that it’s just a couple of static backgrounds that change whenever you enter or leave an area, the artwork itself is much darker and grungier, which actually helps with the atmosphere.

Even if it doesn’t bring anything new to the genre, Forgotten Places: Regained Castle is more than capable to keep you engaged for a few hours, especially if you enjoy puzzles. The grimy atmosphere might just make you feel a bit uneasy at some point.
