Simulators have come quite a long way in the last couple of years, especially when it comes to racing or various other sports. Better physics engines make it easier for the developers to integrate mechanics that are closer to reality, but there’s more to a fun game than the physics. Games like Football Manager simulate numbers and percentages, which can be just as fun under the right circumstances.
Football Manager 2018 is this year’s entry in the popular soccer management sim franchise, and it comes with quite a few changes and updates. As always, these changes are not meant to make the game feel unfamiliar to old fans, but at the same time provide them with new ways to have fun and simulate their soccer manager careers. However, it takes a long time to decide whether these changes make the game better, given the unique gameplay style.
To begin with, the game puts a lot more emphasis on team dynamics in this installment, which means that it’s very important to keep an eye on the players and their interactions at all times. Working together on the pitch is a lot easier if they get along with each other in the dressing room, and there are options at your disposal to make these interactions much more pleasant for everyone.
The scouting system has been changed as well, and it’s now designed to simulate how the real process works, complete with in-depth data analysis and wider scouting options. It can be a bit difficult to figure out how everything works now, however, since the system can be pretty daunting at first. The medical side of things is more advanced as well, which means that you can keep an eye on injuries and player form much easier.
Lastly, the visual changes are quite noticeable this year, since a new graphics engine has been integrated when it comes to the Matchday simulation aspect. Everything should look much better now, almost rivaling FIFA or similar games in this aspect. However, the interface has received a big overhaul as well, which might make it difficult for veterans to find their way around the various menus and panels.
In the end, Football Manager 2018 comes with some great improvements and some drawbacks, but it’s up to you to decide whether you can live with the new interface or the confusing scouting system. However, everything else is more or less the same, so most changes are only cosmetic in nature.
