As long as the action is exciting and there are constant twists in the plot, people don’t care too much about realism when it comes to supernatural movies or video games. Hence, a ghost is a ghost, so it doesn’t really matter if you are a believer or not as long as the story makes sense. In the world of casual games, the writing is even less important, because the expectations are a bit lower to begin with.

Fear For Sale: The Curse of Whitefall is a hidden object adventure game that puts you in the role of a paranormal investigator called to Alaska in order to solve a nasty ghost problem. If you are familiar with HOPAs, then you should find your way around the interface and the puzzles very quickly, because there are no major gameplay changes from what you may be used to.

As mentioned before, the action takes place in Alaska, and the main character is a woman well-versed in the art of dealing with spirits of all kinds. Since the ghosts appear to be tied to a construction site, that’s where the adventure begins, but soon enough the main character finds herself transported into the past by the spirits. Hence, she must find a way to get back to her time period, while also dealing with the case at the same time.

Since the gameplay follows the same rules as most games in the genre, your tasks usually require you to recover information or simply find a specific object as you explore the environments. Whenever an actual puzzle pops up, you have to engage in a small mini-game to complete it, but it’s never too difficult to do so. In case you are having trouble, the lower difficulty levels allow you to skip puzzles after a minute or so.

Even if the graphics are pretty basic from a technical point of view, the artwork is very enjoyable and detailed, since every scene is hand-drawn with care. There are some post-processing effects added on top as well, and the cutscenes provide you with a bit of fun too. Lastly, the sound effects and the voice acting are pretty decent, although the latter could be better.

When it’s all said and done, Fear For Sale: The Curse of Whitefall does not try to reinvent the genre, but it does a good job when it comes to puzzles and atmosphere. Thus, it should be able to provide you with a few hours of entertainment.
