Fatehaven is a text-based role-playing game with an open story that can be changed along the way by making choices. It’s also possible to customize your character in a variety of ways and experience the game world differently through his eyes, given the fact that good and evil characters react differently to certain events and situations.

In essence, your task is to cheat destiny and become a powerful mage, while also pursuing a romantic interest along the way. You can choose whether to be poor or rich, as well as pick a specialty along the way to improve your magic skills. As mentioned before, romance is an important piece of the puzzle as well, and there are multiple love interests to pursue if you want the extra thrill.

The game keeps track of your progress and stats, which means that certain events take into consideration stats such as whether you are a leader or a sly person. Naturally, this allows you to play the game multiple times and have different experiences, especially when you consider the fact that the whole story has over 100,000 words.

As it’s always the case with games released with this engine and by this publisher, the whole thing is entirely text-based, which means that there is no artwork and no music to accompany the story. This can be a bummer at first, but if the story catches your attention and you are an avid reader, then it really doesn’t make a difference whether there’s a soundtrack or not.

In the end, pure RPG fans should feel right at home in Fatehaven, although text-based adventure games are quite a small niche nowadays. Hence, if you truly value freedom and choice, this can easily keep you busy for a few hours.
