Ethereal Creatures Demo

One thing that’s certain is that people do not seem able to live in peace for too long, given the fact that there’s always a conflict somewhere in the world. War is a common occurrence and it has been for millennia now, ever since humans started to gather armies and use weapons to hurt each other. Thus, it’s no wonder that most fantasy stories out there feature some kind of terrible war as well.

Ethereal Creatures is a pretty grim visual novel that envisions a future where the human race is all but gone, although they have been replaced by supernatural beings that look just like us. The game does not try to revolutionize the genre, so there are no new gameplay mechanics at work or interesting new ideas in terms of storytelling techniques, but at least it allows you to change the plot along the way.

In short, the story revolves around a prophecy that foretold the demise of the human race, except that the events in the game take place after this has already happened. Hence, the ones left are creatures with special powers, and they do not seem to have any remorse when it comes to waging violence against each other. Your role in the plot is to deal with a mysterious dark force and interact with a few characters along the way.

The story has multiple endings depending on the choices you make along the way, especially since you can also pursue romantic relationships with some of the characters. In fact, this has the heaviest impact on the plot, because it all depends on whose side you take in the conflict. Most of the routes are available in the beginning, but one of them has to be unlocked by completing every other route beforehand.

Lastly, the artwork is worth a mention as well, because the backgrounds look incredibly well, especially when you consider the fact that they are drawn by hand. The cozy environments help a lot with the overall atmosphere throughout the game, not to mention the fact that they also give you something to look at. Not much can be said about the soundtrack yet, but this is still a work in progress at the moment.

In the end, Ethereal Creatures is not quite there yet, but it shows great promise when it comes to artwork and the story. Hence, it’s nice to have multiple routes to choose from, as well as a unique universe to discover.
