Sometimes, it is not enough to provide the gamers with a classic first-person shooter. New ideas are required in order to sparkle the interest of the crowds, which is why studios constantly try to implement certain designs and technologies into their games lately. One of the most sought-after gimmicks that has yet to be fully integrated in a multiplayer game is the freedom to interact with the environment without limits.
Escape of Bipeds is not exactly a game, but it does demonstrate the things you should be able to do in the game it’s based on. Hence, this is merely an engine presentation to show the public what it’s capable of, so don’t expect any actual action or shooting. In fact, short of being able to fly around a small room and looking at boring objects, there’s not much else you can do.
As such, there are two levels included in the demonstration, although one of them is not very interactive. The graveyard map cannot be freely explored, which means that you are stuck in a fixed vantage point and you only get to look at the environment. The other map is just a regular room filled with all sorts of ordinary objects, including a computer, a desk, some pictures, and obviously a door.
Besides the graphics, you also get a short demonstration of what the physics engine is capable of doing. Hence, the room also has a few cardboard boxes stacked on top of each other you can crash into in order to see them fall onto the floor. Granted, the effect looks pretty nice, but it would have been a lot more attractive if you could see it come in handy during an action sequence.
Visually, the graphics engine is decent, although the shaders are a tad too basic to produce anything like what commercial engines are capable of. However, the shadows look pretty slick and there is even a rotating light source demonstrating the dynamic lighting capabilities. Other than that, your jaw should at no point be in any danger to make contact with the floor.
In the end, Escape of Bipeds does have a bit of potential, as long as the developers keep working on the concept and manage to show some action as well. Until then, this is but a somewhat pretty visual presentation with not much value for gamers.
