Quake did manage to gather a huge fan base for itself, thanks to the constant stream of good titles that were part of the series and came out over the years. However, although Quake IV did not manage to impress the public as much as the developers would have liked, there are a few other options to choose from as well, not all of which have a campaign element as well, though.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a multiplayer shooter that aims to combine the old-school style of the previous Quake titles with some new age ideas, as seen in games like Battlefield, Call of Duty, or Medal of Honor. In order to achieve this, the title at hand is mostly based in team play and objectives, rather than the free-for-all carnage that ruled its predecessors and was the cause for countless hours lost on deathmatch servers.
In case you are not familiar with the universe, the Strogg are a race of aliens and they are constantly fighting the GDF, whether for territory, weapons, or just to kill each other off and get custody of Earth. There isn't much of a back story going on, although you can play a campaign mode and go through a series of maps that are meant to give you some insight into the conflict. However, the real fun is in multiplayer, where you can try out every gun and vehicle available for as long as you want.
Although the game modes are based on team play and objectives now, rather than mindless survival of the fittest, matches can still degenerate pretty quickly if the players do not concern themselves with the missions. Hence, although you get extra experience points for completing objectives and occupying territory, you can just ignore all that and keep on firing at the enemies, which is definitely not going to please your team.
As it is customary in the new generation of multiplayer shooters, you can choose your class at the start of the game, which provides you with certain advantages out on the battlefield. Hence, while some soldiers might carry heavier weapons made to deal a lot more damage, others can deploy anti-air guns and anti-vehicle artillery, which is vital when it comes to defending against the enemy tanks, jeeps, or even flying fighters.
In the end, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is not exactly flawless, since there are many gameplay issues that make the game a bit rushed and not entirely enjoyable. However, you can still have a lot of fun with it and really remember what Quake is all about, even if the mechanics are entirely new and you now have to work as a team to win the match.
