When developers try to address the casual audiences, horror games have to be designed with a different philosophy in mind, mainly because no one wants to be psychologically scarred by a video game if they are only looking for a cheap thrill. Hence, casual horror games use regular jump scares to get a reaction out of the players, which gets old pretty quickly.
Endless Inside is a first-person horror game with puzzle elements, in which you play the role of a maintenance guy going into a creepy building after dark in order to repair an electrical failure. The game is designed to be rather scary in terms of atmosphere, given the fact that it features all sorts of creepy sound effects and dark environments, but then again it’s not going to cause any nightmares either.
The action takes place inside an old art university that has been closed for a while, and it would appear that some kind of beings are haunting the said building. Your goal is to investigate the mystery and maybe find out what the creatures want, although you must also survive their attempts to scare you to death. As you might expect, the story is not that complex.
There are also puzzles that need to be solved along the way, since you are able to interact with a handful of objects as you explore various rooms. Sometimes all you have to do is press a button in order to move forward, but there are also situations where you must find clues to unravel the mystery. However, it must be mentioned that the interface is a bit sketchy in the demo at hand, because you are never quite sure when you hover over an important object.
In terms of graphics, Endless Inside is definitely pretty, in spite of the pre-rendered environments. The way you move through the building is very nicely done too, with all sorts of footsteps and clever transitions. Lastly, the sound effects are pretty well chosen, but they can get a bit repetitive and annoying after a while, which is not a good sign.
In the end, Endless Inside can be considered just a Five Nights at Freddy’s clone, but then again it also features more puzzles and exploration. Thus, it’s worth keeping an eye on its development in the upcoming months.
