There’s no shortage of scary video games nowadays, given the fact that it’s a lot easier to integrate good sound effects and graphics, but it’s very difficult for the developers to get the atmosphere right. Hence, franchises like Five Nights at Freddy’s focus on jump scares, which is not a bad thing if that’s what you want, but usually such games fade from a gamer’s memory quite quickly.
Emily Wants To Play Too is an interesting mix of elements, because although it’s not as hardcore as Silent Hill of Amnesia in the atmosphere department, it certainly doesn’t rely on jump scares alone. Hence, the environment and the sound effects can be pretty creepy even when things don’t pop up on the screen at random intervals, which is definitely a good thing.
As for the story, it all revolves around a man who works as a delivery man. His next job is delivering sandwiches to a crime research facility, but things go wrong and he ends up trapped in the said facility. Naturally, that is not all, because there are also living dolls roaming around the place, which means that you have to do your best to avoid them and stay alive throughout the night.
There’s not much to learn in terms of gameplay mechanics, given the fact that all you have to do is walk, run and hide. It’s possible to interact with a few objects as well, plus a couple of puzzles every now and again, but the core mechanics revolve around hiding and avoiding the enemies. Hence, there’s not really any way to defend yourself using guns or anything of the sort.
In terms of graphics, Emily Wants To Play Too actually looks impressive for an indie production, courtesy of the powerful Unreal Engine 4. However, credit to the designers for putting a fair amount of effort into things like textures and level design, because there are plenty of UE4 titles out there that look worse than Game Maker games. The sound effects are great too, which is always a plus in horror games.
Even if it’s not as deep as something like Silent Hill, Emily Wants To Play Too is still very scary, and the atmosphere keeps you on edge at all times. Not only that, but the graphics are great too, so horror fans should have a blast with this one.
