Just when you think you’ve seen everything a platformer can bring to the table, a new one pops up that can keep you glued to your screen for hours on end, either because of innovative concepts or its polished gameplay.
It’s a little bit of both when it comes to Embers of Mirrim, and no player who calls themselves a fan of platformers should miss it. The game’s most distinguishing feature is the main character’s ability to split into two embers at will, each controlled with one of the analog sticks on your controller.
We’ve seen other games that require you to use both analog sticks at the same time to perform certain actions, and this control method allows developers to think up complex challenges that couldn’t be handled otherwise.
In Embers of Mirrim, the idea is very well executed, as you have plenty of chances to use your character’s special ability without this mechanic becoming tedious. Of course, you can expect things to be a bit difficult at first, as moving two objects at the same time, in different directions, is inherently confusing.
This game provides you with a mix of platforming elements and puzzles to solve, the latter being relatively simple for the most part; naturally, the dual-stick control scheme means your dexterity and hand-eye coordination will play a large part in these situations.
Some of the gameplay elements may get a bit repetitive after a while, but the challenges are still different enough to be enjoyable. As long as you don’t find the controls to be too confusing, the game shouldn’t be all that difficult.
There are plenty of things to catch your eye as you are traversing the landscape, from lush forests to roaring waterfalls. There really isn’t anything bad we can say about the game’s graphics, and it runs very smoothly to boot.
When it comes to the story, there doesn’t seem to be much of one at all. A pretty large chunk of the game is playable even in this demo, but you will have to get the full version if you want to know more about the world and its creatures.
There is no reason not to give Embers of Mirrim a try, as this demo includes a decent amount of content, allowing you to travel through multiple areas and complete a large number of challenges. It is almost guaranteed to be a fun experience, especially if you enjoy platformers in general.
