Games like Angry Birds managed to attract millions of players with their simplicity and enjoyable gameplay mechanics, not to mention the fact that many other developers borrowed the concept and used it in a variety of other games. Hence, even the simplest ideas can make a difference if they are utilized in a clever way, and this has been proven a lot of time in the video games industry.
El Ninja is a 2D arcade game in which you have to use a ninja’s special abilities to fly through the levels and kill every enemy while you are at it. The gameplay mechanics are very similar to Angry Birds, in the sense that you launch the ninja using the same procedure, but you also get to control your character mid-flight, which allows you to perform interesting acrobatics if you have good reflexes.
Hence, you start by aiming and fine tuning the power of the shot, after which you have to fly in such a way as to collect all the shurikens spread around the level and kill the enemies that stand in your way. However, you have a limited number of moves at your disposal to do all of this, and you have to restart the level if you happen to run out. Thankfully, you usually have more than enough to achieve your goal.
You are rewarded with a star rating at the end, which depends on how many moves you use and how many you have left. This is actually the only incentive to replay the levels, because everything else gets rather dull and repetitive after the first few minutes. There are not many stages to begin with anyway, which is not good news in a game such as this one.
The difficulty level is way too low as well, because you usually have way too many moves at your disposal, so you are never actively trying to achieve clever shots in order to make it to the end. Thankfully, at least the graphics are nice, even if they are the definition of simplicity. The soundtrack is not bad either, but it seems to be a tad too short, and that might lead to boredom as well.
In the end, El Ninja can easily keep you busy for a few minutes, but it tends to get repetitive after that. Moreover, the levels are somehow too simple to really make you get involved in the process, which is a bit of a bummer.
