The Egyptians managed to build quite the civilization in the span of a few thousand years, and they were also interested in all sorts of primitive technologies. As always, architecture was very important as well, which is why they managed to build such great structures that are still standing today. However, they also left behind many secrets, maybe not all of them willingly.

Egypt Picross: Pharaoh's Riddles is a simple puzzle game in which you have to complete mosaics by following the rules displayed near each row and column. These rules are actually just numbers, which means that you have to fill the right cells and obtain the final shape without making too many mistakes. It’s not a new formula, but the setting is pretty interesting.

As such, you are an explorer trying to uncover the ancient Egyptian secrets, which takes you all over the African continent and through a variety of ancient tombs and burial chambers. Naturally, all that changes are the backgrounds, since the gameplay remains the same throughout the game. However, the puzzles get a lot more demanding later on, which keeps you focused and engaged.

In order to keep you from getting too bored, the puzzles evolve over the course of the game. While the actual rules do not change at all, the size of the mosaics constantly increases, and the space between the tiles you have to fill increases as well. Naturally, you do not have to take wild guesses, since each puzzle should be solved by carefully looking at how everything fits together.

Speaking of which, the graphics are quite pleasant and colorful, although there’s not much to look at except for the backgrounds and the mosaics themselves. The pictures you end up with after you solve the puzzles are quite crude, but it’s only natural, considering the size of each tile. Moreover, the soundtrack isn’t too bad either, although it probably gets repetitive after a while.

In the end, Egypt Picross: Pharaoh's Riddles might not be the most original or intriguing puzzle game out there, but it’s certainly a great time waster. Hence, it’s easy to tackle a few mosaics every now and again and forget about it after that.
