Ego Protocol is a puzzle platformer developed by a studio named Static Dreams and published by IQ Publishing.
Puzzle platformers are not exactly all that popular. Pretty much anything that will require users to destroy some keyboards is either very good or very bad, which means that developers usually don’t try to make these games unless they know that they have a good concept on their hands. The same can be said about Ego Protocol, and I can’t really say if I like it or not.
Like most games that require players to solve puzzles, Ego Protocol can become much too difficult at time. It’s a problem with all games of this type because they are trying to keep people interested with more difficult challenges, but they reach a level after which most people won’t be to continue.
Many developers claim that they have made a really difficult game, but not all of them understand what’s that like. They have to admit that most people won’t be able to finish it, which is a really weird thing for a studio to know ahead of time.
The idea behind Ego Protocol is simple, at least in theory. You have to rearrange the level in such a way that the character that you’re controlling will be able to reach the end. The problem is that you can move the pieces around the level even after the character has been started, and, to top it all off, you can also make it do various actions, like jump or teleport.
It’s not always obvious from the start what you need to do, so when you hit the later levels, you’re going restart quite often. It’s not a big deal, but you need to be prepared with a lot of patience.
There don’t seem to be a lot of problems with the gameplay, just that sometimes the level doesn’t end, even if you finished it. This could be a problem only in the demo. The game is built on the Unity engine, so the system requirements are not all that significant.
