World War II shooters are anything but rare, since you can have your pick from hundreds of possible variations. Some of them try to present famous battles as realistically as possible, while others are just regular shooters with old-school weapons and some nazis added for flavor. There are always new ideas out there, however, so the genre is far from exhausted at this point.

Easy Red is a first-person shooter with a focus on single player missions that try to recreate famous scenarios from WWII. Realism appears to be a big part of the experience, although it must be mentioned from the get-go that the game is a bit rough around the edges at the moment, so it can be difficult to feel immersed. However, there’s a lot of potential here, especially if the developers keep improving the mechanics.

There are multiple scenarios and missions to choose from, each one of which focuses on a specific battle from the second World War. As you might expect, the Normandy invasion is included as well, and it’s possible to experience as a soldier from both sides. However, playing as an Ally is actually very frustrating, given the fact that you disembark on an open beach in front of trenches full of enemies.

The survival aspect is very enjoyable under the right circumstances, especially since you really have to work hard in order to reach a safe spot and take cover. You can pick from handful of possible loadouts, depending on whether you enjoy rifles, machine guns or snipers. The gunplay can be a bit annoying at first, mainly because the weapons appear to have no weight, but you can get used to this in time.

Lastly, the game is quite primitive in the graphics department as well, since it looks fairly simple for this day and age. This is obvious when it comes to animations, textures and particle effects, but then again this is merely an alpha version of the game. Things are bound to be improved in future patches, and the graphics are not that relevant in the genre anyway, at least if everything else works as intended.

It’s the open battlefields and the realism of the scenarios that make Easy Red stand out from the crowd, but the project is anything but ready for the market as of right now. Hence, it needs a lot more work in order to reach its potential.
