RTS games follow a very specific formula when it comes to gameplay, especially regarding the core concepts, such as resource gathering and unit creation. Thus, although they are constantly improved and slightly changed, they have stayed almost the same ever since the genre was first born.

Earth 2160 takes its start at the end of the events from 2150, when the Earth was destroyed and just a handful of people escaped the cataclysm. The only alternative for the remaining human population was the colonization of Mars, which needed to be terra-formed first. Naturally, the three opposing factions managed to achieve this in separate parts of the planet, hence giving birth to yet another war for territory and supremacy.

The story line depicts the first steps of the colonization, when some of the ships responsible for starting the process are attacked and they crash on the red planet. Your character is one of the survivors and you must begin holding your ground and prepare for the rest of the colony to arrive, by gathering supplies and defending your position from enemy forces.

As previously mentioned, the core RTS elements are not absent from Earth 2160 either, since it also relies on the classic base-building game style, where you must gather resources and train as many units as you can. There are only three resources that can be gathered, which are water, metal and silicon. However, you can get them from 18 different sources, each one of which can offer advantages to your troops.

Speaking of troops, the units present in the game can be acquired in the usual way, by building the appropriate facility and training them. The vehicles, on the other hand, can be customized with a wide variety of modular parts, including engines, cannons and shield generators. Thus, your army can never be quite the same, regardless of how many times you use the same composition.

In the end, Earth 2160 brings together all the elements found in a solid RTS game, as well as many other additions that make it unique. The single player campaigns puts all of the four factions to your disposal and you can also use them in skirmish matches or in multiplayer.
