EDGE is an action and puzzle game from the famous Two Tribes studio, which is also responsible for RUSH and both Toki Tori titles.
Two Tribes is made from just two developers who managed to launch three great indie titles. All of these games are different from what everyone was doing, but that should be the basic idea behind any indie game. They didn’t just rehashed some old idea with “16 bit-like” graphics for the sake of it. They actually made new games that can’t really be compared with other stuff that’s being done right now and that should be the best recommendation ever.
Unique games don’t have any guarantee for quality, but that’s not what Two Tribes taught us. They haven’t made any bad games, but on another hand, they only have three of them in their catalog. In any case, EDGE doesn’t follow any of the traditional recopies, and with the exception of a few control issues, it’s a fun game to play.
From the looks of it, the guys from Two Tribes like cubes. They were the main theme for RUSH as well, and they return in EDGE. It’s hard to imagine that you’ll get attached to a cube, but we’ve seen this happening before, with much bigger games like Portal from Valve.
The player controls a cube in a level. The idea is to roll the cube, as strange as that sound, from one end of the level to the other, while gathering prisms, touching switches, and making a great time. You don’t need complicated gameplay to make a successful and fun game, and EDGE is proof that it can be done.
The first few levels are quite easy, but as various traps and new problems are introduced, it becomes more of a puzzle and less of a speed race.
EDGE has only one problem, and that is the control scheme. Technically, it can be controlled with a keyboard or gamepad, but the keyboard is all but unusable. The directions of the keys are tied to the faces of the cube, which means that it's only working as you would expect when moving forward. When the cube needs to move in another direction, the keys no longer apply.
The full version of EDGE has more than 200 levels, so there is enough content to keep players glued to the screen for a long time.
