Multiplayer games can be a bit too disorienting nowadays, given the fact that everything takes place online and they require you to learn a lot of new concepts. On the other hand, modern games are designed to be as approachable as possible, and you can actually get by on your own in most MMOs. Even so, sometimes it’s better to opt for something smaller that can be enjoyed in private.

Dyadic is a 2D puzzle-platformer playable in local multiplayer, and it allows you to work together with a friend in order to tackle various riddles. The gameplay is about as simple as it gets in a 2D platformer, which means that you basically have to jump, pick up objects and avoid various environmental hazards. On the other hand, the actual puzzles get tougher and tougher as you manage to solve them.

The story is not very complex, but then again it doesn’t need to be in order to provide you with a good time. In short, it all starts when the two characters are trapped in some ancient ruins after trying to run away with a mystical artifact. Naturally, they must now work together in order to get out alive and take the artifact in question with them, if possible.

Although there are times with the two players are actually together, most of the time they have to cooperate from different parts of the level. Hence, whether you have to pull switches on one side to open a door for your friend or the other way around, cooperation is the key gameplay element throughout the adventure. However, sometimes you can actually work against the other player and hurt his progress instead.

Lastly, the graphics are not bad at all, especially if you are a fan of 2D artwork and retro level design. There are a few modern elements in there as well, since this is not exactly a 16-bit adventure either. The controls are quite enjoyable too, given the fact that you are free to use gamepads or the keyboard, depending on your personal preference.

When it’s all said and done, Dyadic is not a very original project, but it can be just the right thing for a cozy co-op session with a friend. The puzzles are enjoyable enough to be worth multiple playthroughs, and the controls are smooth enough not to be annoying in the long run.
