Dwarfs!? can best be described as a strategy game, but it’s somehow more than that, although it’s hard to say in what way.
Dwarfs!? is definitely different from other games out there. As the name suggest, you’re using dwarfs like the ones in Tolkien stories to dig after gold. It looks like it’s the best thing ever for dwarfs, not matter the fantasy land that they inhabit. Just like in the book, when dwarfs dig for gold they often uncover other things that should remain buried.
The overall feeling of the game is of relaxation, so the player won’t feel the same kind of pressure. Nonetheless, digging blindly and not knowing what’s going to happen next can create a feeling of anticipation that’s using to game like this.
Ever since Dungeon Keeper was released, building and playing underground have become themes for various other games. Dwarfs!? is pretty different from Dungeon Keeper, but it does share some aspects of gameplay.
On the other hand, Dwarfs!? stands on its own and users will soon forget about that old concept. Players control various dwarf’s units that have all kinds of functions. For the most part, each unit is independent and just perform its function, like digging or patrolling, but the player can change the direction and the focus.
There are various dangers lurking underground, like lakes or magma reservoirs, so users much always pay attention to this problem. You only know that there is a cave in the level, you don’t also know what’s in it. It could be gold, or it could be lava.
Everything costs money and everything that the dwarfs do produces money, so there are always resources. Nevertheless, the efforts of the units must be focused. There are also enemy units, like a simple skeleton, but also powerful shamans or goblins.
The world of Dwarfs!? is a dangerous one and the funky artwork makes it really attractive. It’s a 2D game, but it doesn’t seem to matter all that much. The demo only has a couple of levels and the tutorial, but even so it’s quite fun to play and it’s well worth the download and purchase.
