The Dungeons & Dragons universe is one of the biggest and most intricate fantasy creations out there, with thousands upon thousands of lore pages, race information and many tales about bravo heroes who face off against vicious monsters. Naturally, D&D spread to the video games industry as well, being at the core of some of the most legendary titles out there.

Right off the bat, the game presents itself as a curious combination between real-time strategy mechaics and role-playing, which makes for some interesting results. The story takes place in the mystical land of Eberron, one of the most famous lands of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Hence, from heroes, powerful artifacts and even dragons, everything is in place for a memorable adventure.

The gameplay has been designed in such a way as to make it as natural as possible for the players to experience the transition between the two genres. Thus, you start off by building an army in the regular sense of the world, by gathering resources, raising buildings and training your troops. However, once some of the heroes are out, you can take them along with a few units and head down in the land below, where dungeons filled with monsters await for you and the heroes can gain experience.

Once the units have gained enough experience and gathered some powerful artifacts to use in battle, they can return above the ground and the RTS mechanics are resumed, only your army is now much stronger than it was before. Naturally, each hero has his own set of skills and abilities that can be used in battle, although even some of the units are capable of casting some spells during a fight.

As the name implies, dragonshards are the primary resource used throughout the game, since it is required for the construction of both buildings and units. Alternatively, you can also loot the defeated foes for gold, while you buildings are also capable of producing a small amount of it automatically. Depending on the game mode you are engaged in, some resources might prove to be more valuable than others in certain situations.

Dragonshard may have gambled a bit when it comes to the daring genre mixture, but it looks like the dice roll went in its favor and the game manages to balance everything quite well. Hence, you can definitely have a lot of fun with it, especially if you are on the lookout for a different kind of experience.
