Rescue a dragon princess and help the main character make tough choices in this interactive visual novel #Visual novel #Adventure game #Interactive story #Dragon #Fantasy #Adventure
Few creatures are as popular as dragons in the world of fantasy tales, especially when it comes to video games. Even if their role in the story varies a lot depending on the title, one thing remains constant regarding the intelligent reptiles: Their intelligence. Hence, whether they are the good guys or the villains, they usually have very intricate plans to achieve their goals.
Dragonfate is an interactive visual novel that puts you in the middle of a world populated by both humans and dragons, although they do not seem to get along with each other very much. The game runs by itself most of the time, story-wise, except when you are asked to make certain choices that affect the plot and the route your character takes. Hence, there are no grand ideas in the gameplay department, but that’s not a deal-breaker in the genre.
The story starts when the dragon kingdoms become aware of a long-lost dragon princess who resides in a human settlement. Although these kingdoms do not really get along, they decide to work together in order to rescue her. You play the role of this princess, so a great deal of the quest rests on your shoulders and the decisions you make along the way.
Since there is not much else to do other than reading the text and following the story as it is written, the writers have to really deliver in order to keep you engaged. Dragonfate is not exactly a Charles Dickens novel, but the writing is pretty good, and there are enough interesting events to keep you invested in the story. The characters are nicely constructed, albeit very one-dimensional.
Lastly, the artwork is the other very important element in a visual novel, hence the term “visual.” The game won’t blow you out of the water in this regard, given the rather flat backgrounds and unimpressive character design, but it’s definitely not ugly either. Thus, it’s easy to slip into the proper mood along the way, depending on how much you like dragons and the lore associated with them.
When it’s all said and done, Dragonfate needs more work in order to become a memorable experience, but it appears to be on the right track in most regards. Thus, you can show your support by helping the developers with their Kickstarter campaign.
