Artwork is a very important part of video games nowadays, especially since you can pretty much let your imagination roam free, now that graphics engines are advanced enough to accurately depict your ideas. On the other hand, you can say a lot without using the latest engine, although it’s important that you create a much more engaging experience.
Don't Kill Her is a platformer in which your goal is not very obvious from the start, and it doesn’t seem to get any clearer later on either. The whole thing seems to be about exploration, given the fact that most of your time is spent trying to move and get past all sorts of obstacles. However, it’s not a classic platformer either, because the environment pops up from where, and you certainly do not have to chase mushrooms or collect gold coins.
The story is pretty vague as well, although it probably makes a bit of sense if you really think about it. Hence, it would appear that you play the role of a murderer lost in his victim’s world, although that’s probably just a wild guess. The world in question is undoubtedly weird, on the other hand, especially when it comes to the creatures that populate it.
Some of these creatures and weird objects can be helpful when it comes to navigation, because it’s impossible to advance just by jumping around. Whether you float on some kind of bubbles or ride on a multi-eyed monster to safety, the experience is quite flexible in this regard. It also helps a lot with the atmosphere, because there’s always something interesting to look at.
Speaking of which, the graphics are usually just hand-drawn pictures done with a pencil, although everything is animated as well, so it’s not as static as you might imagine. In fact, the artwork goes very well with the theme and the general atmosphere, at least if you are a fan of weird and surreal landscapes. The music is very relaxing and enjoyable as well, and it goes great with everything else.
In the end, Don't Kill Her is a special kind of game, the kind that leaves marks on your memory. Granted, it’s not complete yet, so the story is not very impressive at the moment. Hence, the full game should clear every doubt, and you can support the developer by contributing to the project’s Indiegogo campaign.
