The Divinity RPG series has been around for quite a bit of time now, which means that it had time to get better and listen to the fans when it came to adding new features, or fixing various bugs. Now, a new title has been released, one that aims to be a class above its predecessors and everything else in the genre.
Divinity II: Ego Draconis tells the tale of a warrior that is chosen to become a Dragon Slayer, who, as the name might give it away, is capable of killing dragons. However, throughout the story, it turns out that you are destined for much greater things and you evolve into something called Dragon Lord, who, beside being far more powerful, can also transform into an actual dragon and breath fire down upon your enemies.
Regardless of how powerful you get to be over the course of the game, you start off in the usual manner, meaning that you can barely lift a sword and use it to defeat a wild boar. By completing quests and defeating a lot enemies, your character gains experience, which can be used to learn new skills and become more powerful. As usual, the class system is entirely dynamic, which means that you can specialize in any of the available classes in any order you like, regardless of how you happen to spend the points.
One of the more unique skills that you happen to learn right in the beginning is the mind reading ability, which allows you hear the thoughts of the NPCs you are talking with. Beside the fact that this operation requires a small portion of your experience, it doesn't work on everybody, since most of the powerful warriors out there can defend themselves from this technique.
Visually, the game does look stunning, especially when it comes to architecture and environment design. Thus, it is a real pleasure to visit large cities and marvel at their imposing buildings, as well as fly over the lands in dragon form and wage destruction over the villages that wronged you. Naturally, all of this is possible thanks to the powerful graphics engine employed by the game, which uses everything from DX10 to high-resolution textures in order to render the world.
While it may be a bit too oriented toward combat and less toward story and character development, Divinity II: Ego Draconis is definitely a fun game, especially when you become a bit more powerful. The beautiful weapons and armors are worth fighting for, especially since they also provide you with quite a few bonuses.
